The Hillcrest Hotel

Originally built in the 1880's, the Hillcrest Hotel on Chebeague Island has been a vacation destination for well over a century. In the beginning of the 20th century, the original hotel burned down and was replaced by the current building in 1920. Over the years the Inn has played an important role in the island community and takes pride in being part of the island's storied history of sailing and architecture.

The Story of Charlie

Rumor has it that the Inn has a permenant resident named "Charlie". The story of Charlie dates back to the 1930's when a maintenance man named Charlie used to take care of the Inn. Charlie spent years working at the Inn and his accomplishments are many - namely that he is soley responsible for having dug the Inn's basement by hand. After having marital disputes with his wife, he moved into room 307 where many guests and islanders feel he still resides today.
